Stroud's museum is free, Berkeley Castle is £17 and the commons cost nothing. Days out across the district with prices, opening days and what is on now.

Stroud district gives you two very different days out. There are the Five Valleys, where the mills, the commons and the canal are within a few miles of each other and most of what you would do is free. Then there is the Vale, running down to the Severn, where the paid attractions are: a Norman castle, a wetland reserve of international standing and the birthplace of vaccination.

Everything below was checked against the venue’s own website on 10 August 2026. Opening days matter more here than anywhere else, because two of the best places in the district close on Thursdays and Fridays and one closes on Mondays.

Berkeley Castle and Dr Jenner's House share the same Sunday-to-Wednesday week, so a Thursday or Friday trip to Berkeley finds both shut.

The free ones

Museum in the Park, Stratford Park, Stroud GL5 4AF, is free, donations welcome, no ticket needed. It holds more than 4,000 objects on the district’s people and landscape, plus a temporary art gallery, a walled garden, a shop and a small café. It opens Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4.30pm and Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4.30pm, closed Mondays, and 11am to 4.30pm on bank holidays. The current show, Park Life, is a community exhibition by Stroud Artists Cooperative about the district’s parks and green spaces, running to 31 August.

Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons are National Trust land, free to walk and free to park on. Between them they give you the best views in the district, north over the Stroud valleys from Rodborough and out towards the Severn from Minchinhampton. Cattle graze both commons and roam loose, so dogs need to be under close control and drivers need to watch the unfenced roads across them.

Stroud Farmers’ Market fills Cornhill Market Place and the streets around it every Saturday, 9am to 2pm, GL5 2HH. The Shambles Market runs at the top of the pedestrianised High Street beside St Laurence Church every Friday and Saturday, 8am to 4pm, GL5 1AP. Both are independently run rather than council markets.

The Stroudwater Navigation towpath between Stonehouse and Brimscombe is the district’s best flat walk, restored as part of Phase 1A of the canal project and largely complete. Cotswold Canals Trust also runs public boat trips from Wallbridge in Stroud.

The paid ones

WWT Slimbridge, Bowditch, Slimbridge GL2 7BT, is the wetland centre Peter Scott founded and it is open seven days a week, 364 days a year. From April to October it runs 9.30am to 5.30pm with last entry at 4.30pm. Booking online saves 10%: on that rate an adult is £17.91, a junior aged 3 to 17 is £11.84, and both a concession for over-65s and full-time students and a young adult ticket for 18 to 24s are £16.02. Under-3s and carers accompanying disabled visitors go free. The Dragonfly Festival runs there until 3 September 2026.

Berkeley Castle, Berkeley, opens Sunday to Wednesday, 11am to 5pm, with last admission to the castle at 4pm. Adults are £17.00, children aged 3 to 16 are £9.00, a family ticket for two adults and two children is £48.00 and under-3s are free. A guided tour of the castle is £2.50 a head on top, the guidebook is £6.00, and pre-booked groups of 20 or more pay £15.00 each. Coming up: a Wolf Hall exhibition from 6 to 30 September, Halloween at the Castle from 25 to 28 October, and a Christmas concert on 13 December 2026.

Woodchester Mansion, Nympsfield, Stonehouse GL10 3TS, is the Victorian house that was abandoned mid-build and left with its floors and roofs unfinished, which is exactly why it is worth seeing. It opens 11am to 5pm every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and bank holiday until 1 November, with extra Thursdays on 6, 13, 20 and 27 August. An adult season pass valid before 18 October is £16. Park in the National Trust’s Buckholt car park at Woodchester Park, £4 in cash unless you are a member. The mansion warns against putting its postcode into a satnav, which will send you to the wrong end of the valley.

On Thursday 13 August at 6.30pm the Festival Players perform The Comedy of Errors there, and there are stone carving workshops on 19 September and 17 October. A children’s Bat Trail runs through the summer holidays; the mansion’s roof is a nationally important horseshoe bat roost.

Painswick Rococo Garden, GL6 6TH, is the only complete rococo garden left in England, open every day 10am to 5pm with last entry at 4pm. Annual membership starts at £37. If you are coming for the snowdrops in winter, tickets must be booked in advance so the garden can control numbers and parking.

Dr Jenner’s House Museum & Gardens in Berkeley is where Edward Jenner carried out the first vaccination, and it opens Sunday to Wednesday, 11am to 4pm, last entry 3pm. No pre-booking is needed and well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

An evening out

The Sub Rooms on George Street, Stroud GL5 1AE, is the town’s main venue, run as a charity rather than by the council, with a programme of music, theatre, comedy, film and workshops. Planning a day by area

A Vale day works best on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, when Berkeley Castle and Dr Jenner’s House are both open in the same small town. Slimbridge is fifteen minutes north of Berkeley and open whatever day you pick, so it is the safe half of the pairing.

A valleys day is the free one. Rodborough and Minchinhampton Commons, the Stroudwater towpath and the Museum in the Park can be strung together in a day without paying for anything except parking, and a Saturday adds both markets.

A wet day narrows to the Museum in the Park, Berkeley Castle and the Sub Rooms programme; Woodchester Mansion is roofless in parts by design and the commons offer no shelter at all.
